After it became clear that Chris Paul wouldn’t be returning to the Golden State Warriors and would become a free agent this summer, the rumor mill began churning about where the veteran point guard would land in what could be the last stretch of a storied NBA career.

Many believed that the 39-year-old would go ring-chasing at this point in his career, as many aging players of his caliber tend to do, especially if they’ve never been able to lift the Larry O’Brien Trophy.

The two most likely destinations seemed to be a return to the Los Angeles Clippers or finally teaming up with close friend LeBron James on the Los Angeles Lakers.

However, neither of those teams seemed to stand a chance when Paul became available as he took a route that was a rumor but seemed highly unlikely due to his future team’s inexperience and chances of winning a title being slim-to-none despite having potential with a superstar in the making.

Paul didn’t wait long to make his decision as a free agent, joining the San Antonio Spurs to team up with phenom Victor Wembanyama and legendary head coach Gregg Popovich.

Although this was a surprising decision, Paul had his reasons, saying he valued playing time more than chasing an elusive championship, via NBA on ESPN.

Chris Paul said playing time was more important to him than chasing a ring when he chose to join the Spurs.

Clearly, Paul picked happiness in playing for a lesser team rather than coming off the bench for a possible contender. He does have a great opportunity to help build a winning culture again in San Antonio while playing alongside someone many believe will be the best player in the league someday.

It’ll be interesting to see how this move pans out, and if Paul is content being in a potentially tricky situation in terms of winning with the Spurs.
