Team USA men’s basketball is preparing to win its fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal, and it looked very capable of doing so when it defeated Team Canada rather easily in its first exhibition game.

Several players did well for the United States, but Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards led the team in scoring with 13 points coming off the bench, going 6-for-10 from the field in the 86-72 victory in Las Vegas.

He has claimed that he may be the best player on Team USA, but he also admitted that he was nervous for his first game as a member of the U.S. Olympic team, per Chris Hine.

“I was nervous for real, I ain’t gonna lie,” Edwards said.

Anthony Edwards: “I was nervous for real, I ain’t gonna lie. I told Bron … I ain’t been nervous in a minute. My first time playing in the Olympics. I definitely was nervous.”

Edwards is emerging as a superstar, and in the 2024 NBA Playoffs further reinforced the idea that he is arriving as a future face of the league.

He led the Timberwolves, somewhat unexpectedly, to the 2024 Western Conference Finals, eliminating the defending NBA champion Denver Nuggets in the second round by completely dominating the second half of Game 7 on the road.

The 22-year-old is one of the most confident players in basketball, and his belief sounds more matter-of-fact rather than arrogant or grating.

This past regular season, he averaged 25.9 points, 5.4 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game, and he increased that production to 27.6 points, 7.0 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game while also improving his shooting efficiency in the playoffs.

Thanks to standouts such as Edwards, Jayson Tatum, Anthony Davis, LeBron James and Stephen Curry, Team USA boasts a rather impressive roster that is favored to win the gold medal when it heads to Paris for the 2024 Summer Olympics.

It is arguably the most impressive U.S. roster since at least the 2008 Redeem Team, and quite possibly even the legendary 1992 Dream Team.
