All NFL teams have similar concepts, but they all run different versions of them.
Either because of their system, formations, personnel, or offensive style, every single offensive coordinator and team has a way of taking those same concepts and adapting them to their team.
That’s why, even though professional quarterbacks might be aware and familiar with all those concepts, it still takes a lot of time to learn a playbook.
Nonetheless, the Los Angeles Rams and Baker Mayfield didn’t seem to care too much about that.
Shortly after being waived by the Carolina Panthers, Sean McVay reached out to the former No. 1 pick, as Matthew Stafford and John Wolford were both pretty banged up and they were in desperate need of a quarterback.
Recently, in an interview for Pardon My Take, Mayfield revealed that he wasn’t even sure about whether he was going to play, yet he wound up leading the team to a big win without even knowing the playbook.

Mayfield got together with the offensive coordinator, McVay, and some of his assistants and got right to it.
Then, with not that much time to rest, he got to practice and, as the day went by, it seemed likelier that he was going to play.
Per Mayfield, they made the decision while driving on the way to SoFi Stadium, knowing that they didn’t have anything to lose at that point.
Mayfield may not have had the career some expected him to have, but he’s never shied away from any challenge, and his competitive drive and confidence helped him get his career back on track.
