The New York Giants, and particularly GM Joe Schoen, have drawn plenty of criticism for the way they dealt with Saquon Barkley’s situation.

Some fans and some analysts felt that Schoen didn’t value Barkley enough and that the way he approached the whole situation was disrespectful.

However, that’s not how Boomer Esiason feels.

Talking on WFAN Sports Radio, the former quarterback claimed that Schoen was just doing his job, which was to think ruthlessly.

“I think Joe Schoen was thinking ruthlessly like a GM should think,” Esiason said.

He knew that the Giants had other areas to improve and issues to fix, and paying Barkley that much money would’ve prevented him from doing so.

Of course, that makes perfect sense, and that’s his job.

Then again, it was also his job to make the numbers work in the first place so he wouldn’t have to be in this position.

The Giants needed Barkley, and so did Daniel Jones.

However, we’ve seen GMs seemingly make mistakes and end up being right over and over, so there’s always a chance that this is the case.

Schoen knows he’s in the spotlight, and these decisions could make or break his future with the organization.
