The San Francisco 49ers and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk have been having a bit of a staring contest all offseason as Aiyuk has been seeking a new contract or a trade, while the Niners don’t appear keen on giving him either one.
Aiyuk officially requested a trade yesterday and one analyst recently revealed how much money he’d lose in a potential holdout.
The Athletic’s David Lombardi shared on X, “$40k per day is the [possible fine] for missed days of Training Camp…If the 49ers really start playing hard ball, they can theoretically fine Aiyuk up to $829k per preseason game if he’s still not around.”

It’s hard to imagine any place in the world you wouldn’t go to if you were subject to an $829,000 fine for not showing up, so this standoff escalating to that point seems unlikely for both parties, though you never know what could happen.
Aiyuk has gotten better every year and posted 75 catches for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns last season as he developed into Brock Purdy’s favorite target, and he is ready to be compensated appropriately for his production.
The Niners knew this day was going to come as the team has huge contracts all across the field on both sides of the ball, and naturally, there were going to be some tough decisions on the horizon.
At the skill positions alone, the Niners have Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, and Christian McCaffrey are all under large contracts for the foreseeable future, and unfortunately, you can’t pay everybody.
