The Washington Wizards weren’t particularly great last season, but it paid off.
The No. 2 pick gave them an opportunity to get a potential franchise player in Alex Sarr.
Sarr refused to work out for the Atlanta Hawks, as, for reasons that haven’t been disclosed yet, he didn’t seem to be interested in playing for them.
He had been penciled in as the best player in the class for most of the pre-draft process, as scouts saw him as a generational defender in the making.
Notably, his talents haven’t been on full display during his most recent game in the NBA Summer League, as he went 0-for-15 from the floor and 0-for-7 from beyond the arc.
Perhaps that’s why he made the decision to switch jersey numbers, going from No. 12 to No. 20, as reported by Etienne Catalan on Twitter.

Sarr wore No. 20 overseas, so the fact that he had decided to turn to No. 12 was kind of odd in the first place.
The number was left vacant by Landry Shamet, so he could’ve chosen it in the nation’s capital from scratch.
Sarr has shown his prowess on the defensive end of the floor, particularly as a rim protector, and some believe he has the potential to be a perennial Defensive Player of the Year candidate.
He’s yet another French seven-footer who could turn out to be one of the best defenders in the game right away.
Hopefully, this jersey change will come with improved shooting or efficiency for when it counts.
