Of course there are exciting paydays that come with being an NFL player, even a rookie.
But the veterans make sure to extract a considerable amount from these new players who will potentially take their jobs, and the New England Patriots in the heyday of their dynasty were certainly no different.
Star wide receiver Julian Edelman described a rite of passage suffered by rookies when he entered the NFL in 2009.
The Super Bowl LIII MVP and three-time champion can laugh about it now, but it might not have been so funny at the time.
Edelman told the “Are You Garbage?” podcast that his rookie dinner set him back quite a bit of money, though not as much as some of his fellow Patriots newcomers.
The receiver recalled, “The first draft pick would automatically pay for half of the bill and then they would scale it. I was the seventh-round pick so I think I paid like $3,000. The bill was probably a couple hundred grand.”

Edelman remembered Tom Brady making a very brief appearance, ordering “a $6,000 bottle of wine,” taking a sip and then bolting.
The star wideout was honored to spend all 11 of his NFL seasons with the Patriots, and he caught at least 100 passes during two different seasons despite being one of the smallest players on the field.
And in New England’s 13-3 triumph over the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII, Edelman hauled in 10 Brady tosses for 141 yards as the teams fought to the lowest scoring title game in league history.
