The Minnesota Vikings are entering a new era at quarterback.

After six seasons with Kirk Cousins, the Vikings let him sign with the Atlanta Falcons this offseason in order to turn the page.

The quarterback of the future in Minnesota appears to be J.J. McCarthy, who was selected at No. 10 overall by the Vikings in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Veteran quarterback Sam Darnold, who is on a one-year deal, is most likely not the long-term option.

Darren Wolfson of SKOR North believes Darnold will start the season opener but doesn’t know what will happen beyond that.

“I’ve not heard anything bad about J.J. McCarthy. Now, that doesn’t suggest he’s starting Week 1 at the New York Giants. … I’m positive Sam Darnold is starting Week 1. … Everything I’ve heard has excited a lot of people,” Wolfson said.

Per @DWolfsonKSTP, he’s “positive” #Vikings QB Sam Darnold is starting week 1 but after that… who knows

Wolfson also noted that he hasn’t “heard anything bad about J.J. McCarthy” and that he’s heard McCarthy “has excited a lot of people in Eagen”.

Coming off a college national championship at Michigan, McCarthy is doing some good things on the practice field and in the facility in the Twin Cities.

However, it might take him a little while to get acclimated to the NFL game, which is why Darnold is there.

Also, what happens if Darnold plays well and wins a lot of games?

Head coach Kevin O’Connell would then have to consider rolling with the hot hand, because the goal in the NFL is to win.

From a lot of angles, this is going to be a fascinating season in Minnesota because of the possibility of what Darnold can do and the growth of McCarthy.
