Some statistics are so mind-boggling that they beg the question if they are really true.

One recently arose concerning the Chicago Bears and their well-chronicled struggles with finding the right quarterback to lead the Monsters of the Midway back to prominence.

And its answer may have come with the first selection in the 2024 NFL draft – Caleb Williams.

NFL on ESPN noted that in Chicago’s storied 104-year history, the team has never had a quarterback throw for 4,000 yards or 30 touchdowns.

That hardly seems possible in today’s NFL, but it’s true.

Jay Cutler came close in 2014 with 3,812 passing yards and 28 touchdowns, but never got over that statistical hump.

According to ESPN, when Caleb Williams starts the first game of the season as he is certainly expected to do, he will become the 40th quarterback to start in Chicago since 1989.

That followed the trade that shipped Super Bowl winner Jim McMahon out of town.

Williams is supposed to be the answer to the Bears quarterback woes, and he recently signed his four-year, $39.4 million rookie contract.

Early reports are that the USC product is transitioning well to the NFL game, though he is having to learn techniques he never deployed while in college.

It may be too much to expect that Williams will erase over a century of woes in the Windy City during his rookie campaign.

But he is certainly capable of being a generational talent and finally becoming what Bears fans have sought for generations – a top-level NFL quarterback.

The pieces are in place around him, and the city is his for the taking.
