The Cleveland Cavaliers entered the offseason with two main priorities: Finding a new coach, and getting Donovan Mitchell locked in for the future.

They did so by hiring Kenny Atkinson to replace JB Bickerstaff, and it didn’t take long before Mitchell also put pen to paper.

There was another item near the top of their list, and that was to deal with Evan Mobley’s future.

That’s why it’s not a surprise to see them spending big bucks to keep the former No. 3 pick in Cleveland for the long run.

According to a report by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the talented PF/C has agreed on a five-year, $224 million maximum contract extension that could be worth as much as $269 million, depending on incentives and milestones.

The USC product has almost averaged a double-double in his playoff career, with 16 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks per game.

The 23-year-old already has a first-team All-Defense selection under his belt and was one of the leading candidates to win Defensive Player of the Year in 2023.

Per Wojnarowski, he’s one of just four players with at least 300 blocks and 150 steals since he entered the league in 2022, with Rudy Gobert, Anthony Davis, and Jaren Jackson Jr. being the others.

Mobley’s defensive dominance is more than evident, but his offensive game has yet to catch up.

He hasn’t developed the shooting touch scouts saw in him in college, and he hasn’t been very efficient as a post-up player either.

Still, he’s young and the talent is most definitely there.
