Last season, plenty of fans and insiders predicted the Minnesota Vikings would trade Kirk Cousins.
They got off to a slow start to the season and didn’t seem to be good enough to compete at the highest level.
Cousins was entering the final year of his contract and was balling out, and multiple teams would’ve likely taken him in a heartbeat.
Nonetheless, he refused to waive his no-trade clause and claimed that he wanted to run it back there, which is why it was kind of surprising to see him leave so early in free agency.
Now, a report by Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk reveals that Cousins left because of the Vikings’ plans to draft a quarterback in the first round.
The Vikings told Kirk Cousins they wanted to draft a quarterback in round one but keep Cousins as the starter for 2024 and possibly beyond. So he left. And that’s exactly what his new team ended up doing. https://t.co/kWllmR9gYw

Apparently, the Vikings informed Cousins of their desire to find his replacement, even though Cousins would still be the starter in 2024 and possibly beyond.
That makes sense, considering that he’s 35 years of age already.
Cousins didn’t like the plan and signed with the Atlanta Falcons, which, ironically, did the very same just a couple of weeks after getting him.
In the end, the Vikings got nothing in return from Cousins when they could’ve at least gotten a pick or some players for his services.
The Falcons took Michael Penix Jr. as his possible replacement, and while Cousins is about to make a lot of money again, he might not finish his deal as the starting quarterback this time.
