The upcoming Paris Olympics will be LeBron James’ last chance to play basketball on behalf of his country.

For these final games, he will get the greatest honor of them all.

A video shared by USA Basketball showed the moment that Steph Curry informed James that he would be America’s flag bearer for the big games.

That means he will be at the front of the American coalition of athletes during the opening ceremony, waving the flag and leading his country.

Fit to lead

This is a major honor for James, who has appeared in multiple other Olympics but has never been a flag bearer.

In fact, no USA Men’s Basketball member has ever been the country’s flag bearer, although two other basketball players – Dawn Staley and Sue Bird – have in the past.

That makes this selection even more important, especially because James has publicly said he won’t be returning in 2028.

The choice of James is a celebration of his career and all he has done for popular sports.

It is also a strong sign showing just how important he is to his country.

Finally, it proves that Team USA Basketball sees him as their leader because they nominated him for the highly-coveted position.

James received the big news in London, just a few hours before his team was set to play its last pre-Olympics exhibition game against Germany.

Germany will be a tough opponent because they recently won the World Cup and will give the Americans one last challenge before the Olympics start next week.

We don’t know if Team USA will make good on their promise of winning the gold medal but we do know who will lead them into the games.
