The quarterback situation in the Twin Cities is a fascinating one at the start of training camp.
Despite the Minnesota Vikings deciding to draft Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy with the No. 10 overall pick in April, the team has decided to give the majority of first-team reps to veteran Sam Darnold when training camp opens up, according to ESPN’s Kevin Seifert.
“Sam Darnold will take the majority of first-team snaps when camp opens, Kevin O’Connell reiterated, but he does expect J.J. McCarthy to get some as well,” Seifert recently wrote on social media.

This move isn’t that wild considering Darnold is entering his seventh NFL season and has 56 career starts under his belt.
It also would not be a surprise to see Darnold be named the starter when the season kicks off because of that experience.
However, as Seifert noted, McCarthy will be getting some first-team reps in camp too, so perhaps the national champion can prove that he can be the starter right away.
But for now, the Vikings want to go with the experienced arm in the former first-rounder Darnold.
This can give McCarthy some time to get more acclimated to the NFL level before he possibly takes over as the starter later on down the road.
In a conference where anything can go, the Vikings have a chance to surprise some people, especially if the quarterback position is a stable one.
