The New England Patriots have already made up their minds about their starting quarterback.

Earlier in the week, HC Jerod Mayo admitted that Jacoby Brissett was the most NFL-ready QB they had on the roster right now.

Nonetheless, that doesn’t mean Drake Maye won’t be a priority in training camp.

Talking to the media, Mayo stated that Maye would also have plenty of opportunities to get some important reps in practice, adding that they would have a script and a plan for what they will work with him on every day of the week (Via Tommy Freeze Pops).

Maye’s talent is more than impressive, but he’s got plenty of work to do.

His footwork, mechanics, and decision-making were the biggest knocks on him when he was in college, and while all of that is fixable, it won’t happen overnight.

Mayo has learned from Bill Belichicks’ mistakes, and he won’t put his rookie quarterback in a tough position by rushing him into the action.

Of course, some fans might be disappointed in the fact that they may not get an opportunity to watch their first-round quarterback take the field for the entirety of his rookie season, but it’s all for the greater good.

Also, it wouldn’t be so shocking if they felt differently about him later at some point in the campaign and gave him an opportunity to test the waters and start to see where he’s truly at in his development.
