The New England Patriots know they made a mistake with Mac Jones.
They didn’t give him a legitimate chance to succeed by rushing him into the fire.
More than that, the way they dealt with his development and the on-and-off dynamics with different assistant coaches and offensive coordinators didn’t do much to help.
That’s why they’re taking a radically different approach with their new quarterback.
Recently, HC Jerod Mayo confirmed that they would go with Jacoby Brissett as the starter for the time being, allowing Drake Maye to develop behind him.
So far, so good for him.
According to veteran safety Jabrill Peppers, the Patriots are making it very difficult on Maye on defense, but he’s been great at reading them and picking them apart (Via Savage Sports).

“He looks good, man. He’s getting more comfortable with the scheme, him and his guys are getting the right timing. He has exceptional arm talent,” Peppers said.

Talking to Mike Reiss of ESPN, Peppers claimed that Maye has been getting very comfortable with the scheme and has looked better and better as the days go by.
He also thinks that Brissett is going to be the perfect mentor for him.
The Patriots know they’re not likely to compete at the highest level this season, so the campaign will most likely be all about player development.
It’s been a long while since we last saw the Patriots as a legitimate threat, and the fans might start to lose their patience soon.
However, this time, it’ll be for the greater good at least, and years from now, they will most likely agree that this was the right way to deal with Maye’s development.
