After a disappointing season with the Golden State Warriors, veteran point guard Chris Paul was expected to be on the move once again this summer as the team was either going to try to trade him or release him because it didn’t want to take on the $30 million he had left on his non-guaranteed deal.

Ultimately, the Warriors couldn’t find a trade partner, which wasn’t surprising considering the large amount they’d have to pay Paul for one year, and decided to waive him, making the 39-year-old a free agent.

Although Paul is clearly past his prime and nearing 40, there was still a market for the journeyman, as he has had the knack for making teams that he’s played for that much better after joining the squad.

Most people believed that Paul would either return to the Los Angeles Clippers or sign with the Los Angeles Lakers to finally play alongside his good friend LeBron James.

It seems that neither of those teams appealed to him, as he valued playing time, which he will get plenty of now that he’s signed with San Antonio to join forces with French phenom Victor Wembanyama and legendary head coach Gregg Popovich.

The prospect of playing with the Spurs appealed to him, and Colin Cowherd of FOX Sports recently asked him what he thinks Wembanyma’s ceiling is in the NBA via The Herd with Colin Cowherd.

“I don’t think he has one… He’s one of those guys that after the game this past year, we talked about how weird it was to guard him,” Paul said.

No player since LeBron James in 2003 received more hype and anticipation heading into his rookie campaign than the Spurs, who now have a franchise player they can build around moving forward.

Although Paul isn’t the player he once was, the veteran guard will be a welcome addition to Popovich’s squad and could be a pivotal piece to turning things around in San Antonio.
