With Mac Jones no longer a feasible option, the New England Patriots needed a new franchise quarterback.
More than that, they also needed a stopgap and a veteran who could willingly mentor whoever came next while keeping the team slightly competitive.
That’s why Jacoby Brissett was a perfect choice for them.
Not only was he a former Patriot but also a guy who has proven to be willing to start or be a substitute and who’s developed great relationships with younger quarterbacks who’ve shared the QB room with him.
With that in mind, Kay Adams asked the veteran about that kind of dynamic and how could someone compete with the very person he’s trying to help (via Up & Adams).

Brissett claimed that he was very confident in his game and what he could bring to the table as a player, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t be a good person and a good teammate as well.
He stated that it was the same dynamic when he, Tom Brady, and Jimmy Garoppolo were all on the team.
They were competing against each other, but they were also helping each other be better because they wanted to have the best quarterback room in the league.
Brissett knew his role.
He always knew that the Patriots were going to roll with a younger quarterback and that he was going to lose his spot at some point.
He also knew that he would be asked to mentor him and teach him the ropes of the game and the league, and he signed up for it.
