Though the Pittsburgh Steelers upgraded at the quarterback spot this offseason, they could have a bit of a quarterback controversy right now.

Former Super Bowl champion Russell Wilson is competing against former No. 11 overall pick Justin Fields for the starting spot, and though Wilson seems to be favored to win the job, it isn’t a certainty that he will.

While this competition for the QB1 spot in Pittsburgh is certainly interesting, host Joe Fortenbaugh said on “Carlin vs. Joe” that neither Wilson nor Fields will be with the Steelers after this season.

“I don’t think as a Steelers fan you should get all that excited … both of these guys are gone after the season,” Fortenbaugh said.

Wilson was the face of the Seattle Seahawks for a decade and led them to a Super Bowl championship in just his second season, but he didn’t quite resemble his old self the past two years with the Denver Broncos.

He had a dismal season in 2022, and last year, his numbers didn’t quite recover all the way to where they were in 2021, his last year in Seattle.

Wilson is 35 years old, and it is an open question whether he has enough left in the tank to contribute to a winning team.

Fields is entering his fourth NFL season, and though he came into the league with high hopes, he fell well short of those expectations with the Chicago Bears.

In his career, he has completed just 60.3 percent of his pass attempts and recorded an 82.3 passer rating while throwing almost as many interceptions (30) as touchdown passes (40).

As a result, it’s very possible Pittsburgh will be back to square one next spring as far as finally finding a worthy successor to the retired Ben Roethlisberger.
