The Minnesota Vikings entered the offseason with a desperate need to solve their quarterback woes.
After Kirk Cousins left for the Atlanta Falcons, it was an all-hands-on-deck situation, hoping they could identify their QB of the future.
They did add Sam Darnold, but it became clear that another move was at play.
The Vikings decided to trade up for J.J. McCarthy in the NFL Draft, hoping he and Darnold could compete for the role of QB1.
Early conversations indicated that Darnold would get the nod as the starter when the season began, but judging by a recent report, that may no longer be the case.
According to Vikings reporter Mark Craig, McCarthy could be the team’s starter in Week 1, namely because he and Darnold have both struggled throughout training camp.
Per @markcraignfl, he thinks #Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy will end up being the Week 1 starter
He did note that neither McCarthy nor Sam Darnold look like #NFL starters right now.

Darnold has more tangible NFL experience, but if their quality of play is similar when the season starts, the Vikings could elect to go with their recent draft pick and see what he can do.
With a player like Justin Jefferson on the roster, having a solid quarterback under center is paramount for the Vikings’ long-term success.
McCarthy might be the guy to help their chances moving forward, but they’ll never know unless they give him a shot.
The NFC North is shaping up to be a difficult division for the foreseeable future, as the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers don’t seem to be going anywhere.
Can the new-look Vikings, led by either McCarthy or Darnold, compete in the next few years?
