New England Patriots fans had a lot more hope coming into the 2024 training camp than they had in prior seasons.
It quickly became clear that Mac Jones wasn’t the quarterback of the future for this franchise, leaving fans frustrated and ready to move on to the next option.
Moving on from Tom Brady is not an easy task, especially since he helped bring six Super Bowl rings to the Patriots.
When the team drafted Drake Maye this year, there was a sense that maybe, just maybe, Maye could help get them back on track.
This optimism remains for some fans, but after Evan Lazar’s recent report, they might be having second thoughts.
As Lazar said via the Patriots on CLNS Media on Twitter, “Right now, I feel like [Drake Maye is] maybe a tick or two slow to some things in some of the reads.”

Being slow to reads is a sign that Maye isn’t necessarily picking up on what the defense is doing, which can be a major problem down the road.
Reading defenses is one of the most important things a quarterback has to do, and if they are slow at it, they typically get sacked a lot.
Thankfully, there are still a few weeks until the season starts, so Maye does have some time to work out any bugs, hopefully getting these issues under control.
Of course, many NFL teams are trying to reserve rookie quarterbacks if possible, so it will be interesting to see how the Patriots handle Maye moving forward.
