Normally, a player who wins the NBA MVP award has gotten to a point where he is a totally established superstar who doesn’t need to prove much, if anything, anymore.

But that isn’t where Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers finds himself at this point of his career.

He won the MVP award for the 2022-23 season, yet Chris Broussard said on “First Things First” that there will be no more excuses for him from this point on.

“I think this is the beginning of what will be the most scrutinized stretch of Joel Embiid’s NBA career,” Broussard said. “… People are going to be like, ‘No more excuses.’”

Embiid was expected to be a key member of Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics, but he hasn’t played well so far, and in its most recent game versus South Sudan, he lost his starting spot and didn’t play a single minute.

But the most glaring deficiency on his resume is his lack of NBA playoff success.

Despite being surrounded by a good amount of talent in Philadelphia, he has never reached the Eastern Conference Finals in eight NBA seasons.

Furthermore, his playoff stats are significantly lower than his regular season stats. He has career numbers of 27.9 points per game on 50.4 percent shooting in the regular season, but in the postseason, he’s at just 24.9 points per game on 45.9 percent shooting.

Embiid is 30 years old, and though he’s right in the middle of his prime, he doesn’t have all the time in the world to win an NBA championship.

He has also been criticized for being injury-prone and not taking great care of his body in the offseason, and therefore is in danger of his career someday ending as a big disappointment.
