Ever since the San Francisco 49ers lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl back in February, the team has been trying to put together a contract extension for star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who wants to secure his long-term future with the storied franchise while also getting paid as one of the best players in the NFL at his position.

With training camp underway and only a few weeks left until Week 1, when the 49ers will host Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets at Levi’s Stadium, the two sides have yet to see eye-to-eye on a new deal, which led to Aiyuk requesting a trade before the 2024 campaign.

Despite the trade request, which happened well before training camp started, Aiyuk showed up and seemed to be in good spirits, with a video surfacing of him being cordial with general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Even though he seems to still have a good relationship with Shanahan and Lynch, a deal hasn’t come to fruition, and he now has been absent from a recent practice, according to Grant Cohn of Sports Illustrated.

Along with being a no-show at practice, head coach Kyle Shanahan provided an update on how contract talks with Aiyuk are going at the moment while also addressing the viral video of connecting with his star receiver on the field recently, according to Clayton Holloway of NFL Network.

Kyle Shanahan says there’s no update on the Brandon Aiyuk contract situation.

Asked about the viral video of him and Aiyuk greeting each other at practice earlier this week, “it’s usually how we greet each other… it’s a bro hug.”

Although Shanahan doesn’t seem bothered by the ongoing contract situation with one of his best players, it is getting to the point where a trade might be the only option because Aiyuk doesn’t seem to like the direction things are going for him in San Francisco.

It’ll be interesting to see if the 49ers’ brass can resolve the issue with Aiyuk in the coming weeks or if the team is forced to send him elsewhere.
