Usually, this is the time of year when Dallas Cowboys fans are pounding their chests and proclaiming that their team will end up winning the Super Bowl.

But the confidence and bravado coming out of the Cowboys and their fans this time around seems a bit muted.

Pass rusher Micah Parsons, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and quarterback Dak Prescott are all looking for contract extensions, and one has to wonder how the organization can afford to pay all three while retaining its other key players.

On “First Things First,” Nick Wright said Prescott’s next contract will be a record-breaker, and that maybe the Cowboys don’t want him to stay that badly after all.

Wright therefore believes the 2024 season will be Prescott’s last one as a member of the Cowboys.

“I don’t think they are going to pay him $65 million a year, and because of that he’s going to hit free agency,” Wright said. “… I do believe this will be Dak’s last year in Dallas because he is this close to a contract that people can’t fathom what it’s going to be.”

“The Cowboys are not going to pay Dak $65M/yr and bc of that he’s going to hit free agency. This will be Dak’s last year in Dallas bc he’s this close to a contract that people can’t fathom what it’s going to be.”

Prescott is universally considered an elite or near-elite quarterback, and he’s coming off a season when he led the NFL in pass completions and touchdown passes and was a leading MVP candidate.

But the 10,000-pound elephant in the room is his repeated poor performances in the playoffs, and one must factor that into his overall value.

Last season, Dallas looked dominant at times, especially on defense, and there were stretches when it appeared like it had a great shot at reaching the Super Bowl.

But the Cowboys lost a few crucial regular-season matchups, including games against the San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills, and then got trounced in the wild-card round of the playoffs by the Green Bay Packers.

An argument could be made that the Cowboys, given the relative youth of their other stars, would be better off moving on from Prescott and looking for a new franchise QB.
