After the New England Patriots officially parted ways with longtime head coach Bill Belichick following a disappointing 2023 season, many believed that it wouldn’t be long before he got another head coaching job in the NFL, with the distinction of being arguably the greatest ever to do it as the leader on the sideline.
However, surprisingly enough despite all the available coaching vacancies, Belichick didn’t get hired by another team, which sent some shockwaves across the league, as the consensus was he’d land with the Atlanta Falcons or another team looking for a new head coach like the Los Angeles Chargers or Washington Commanders.
Instead, the 2024 NFL regular season will get underway without Belichick patrolling the sidelines with a headset, hoodie and his trademark scowl.
Although it was a bit of a shock to see struggling franchises pass on the opportunity to hire Belichick, there’s always next time, as there’s bound to be other head coaching jobs that open up.
Former Patriots star Julian Edelman recently appeared on “The Herd with Colin Cowherd” and said he believes that his former head coach will benefit from a year off.
“I do think Bill wants to get back into coaching. I think this is a great thing for him to have a year off. … It gives you a perspective,” Edelman said.

Despite Edelman’s optimism, only time will tell if Belichick will get another shot at being a head coach in the NFL and get the opportunity for the 27 wins he needs to break Don Shula’s all-time record.
However, Edelman is probably right in terms of needing a year off after going through an epic roller coaster ride over the past two and a half decades with the Patriots, which would exhaust anyone.
