The New England Patriots are one of the few NFL teams with the makings of a good old-fashioned quarterback controversy at training camp, but they aren’t letting us have any fun with it because they have already made it clear that Jacoby Brissett is the starter for now while Drake Maye, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, will marinate on the bench until he is deemed ready to compete.
Though not fun or surprising, Brissett was brought back to New England for exactly this reason. He is such a valuable veteran presence in a quarterback room, and he recently revealed what message he has been sending to the rookie during training camp.
“Just keep going, man. It’s a long training camp,” Brisset said, via Mike Reiss of ESPN. “… The plays are going to make themselves, it’s just about doing the little things day in and day out that’s going to give you the chance to make the right play.”

Brissett has been an efficient backup and spot starter in the league since the Pats selected him in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft, and there’s a reason he is so highly regarded even though no team has ever committed to him as a long-term starter.
Fans will naturally clamor for Maye quickly as it’s obvious he is the future franchise QB, but it’s comforting to see that Brissett supports this idea and there’s no animosity between them.
Brissett is doing everything he can to make this team better, now and in the future.
