The New Orleans Saints were considered the favorites to win the NFC South in the 2023 NFL season but came up well short of their goal after inconsistent play on both sides of the ball.
The offense was particularly disappointing because new addition Derek Carr failed to live up to expectations at quarterback.
Carr signed a four-year contract the previous offseason after he was released by the Las Vegas Raiders and was considered an upgrade for the Saints at the position.
However, the veteran struggled to connect with his receivers, and as a result, went into this offseason with question marks about his viability as their starter.
Despite the rough first year with the Saints, Carr seems to be settling in and reportedly had a strong practice recently, via Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football.
“Outstanding day for Saints’ first-string offense. Easily best of summer. Carr was outstanding, hitting [Chris] Olave deep multiple times (including about 60 yards in the air). Carr even ran one in. Run game popped, play-action smooth. Only marred by a great Alontae Taylor INT on last play,” Triplett reported.

It’s good for Saints fans to hear that Carr is having a good training camp so far, and it’s likely music to their ears that he’s connecting with No. 1 receiver Olave.
Carr and Olave never seemed to get on the same page in their first year working together, so that connection will be crucial to monitor during the preseason.
If Carr’s able to bounce back, New Orleans should be able to return to the postseason mix.
