The New England Patriots have made a decision to commit to Drake Maye for the future.

That means they must make sure to put him in the best possible position, even if that means waiting for a little longer than they would initially want to.

Maye isn’t going to start the season right away, with HC Jerod Mayo confirming that Jacoby Brissett was their most ‘NFL-ready’ quarterback right now.

With that in mind, former coach Ernie Adams shared his thoughts on the situation.

Talking to Julian Edelman for his ‘Names With Games’ podcast, Adams argued that Maye should start when he’s ready to do so, and not one day earlier (via Savage Sports).

He explained that it would be mostly a judgment call for the Patriots and their coaching staff, as they will have to assess whether he can execute their offense at full speed against NFL-caliber defenses, and that will only come with practice.

Per Adams, the Patriots simply cannot rush their young quarterback into the action.

The Patriots made that mistake with Mac Jones before.

Instead of working with him and developing him, they rushed him into the fire, and while he looked ready and poised early in his career, that wound up hurting him in the long run.

Now, they simply cannot afford to make the same mistake.

And while Maye has all the physical tools to be an outstanding quarterback for years to come, it’s also clear that he has to put in plenty of work in his game as well.
