An old friend is returning to play for the San Francisco 49ers.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the team is bringing back veteran running back Matt Breida, who spent three previous seasons with the team (2017-2019).

Going into his eighth NFL season, the former undrafted free agent will look to provide some depth behind All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey and veteran Elijah Mitchell.

Breida’s best career season of his NFL career came in 2018 in his second year in the Bay when he recorded over 1,000 scrimmage yards and five touchdowns.

GM John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan are bringing back a player who has a lot of familiarity with what they do on offense.

However, he is coming off the worst season of his career with the New York Giants.

The former Georgia Southern star put up just 151 rushing yards and a single rushing touchdown in 17 games.

Now, a lot of that has to do with the fact that he was backing up Pro Bowl running back Saquon Barkley, which is why he could be moving into the perfect role back with his old team.

The 29-year-old has been part of a running back committee multiple times over in his career and is not new to the situation.

He was part of a running back-by-committee approach in San Francisco the first time around, as well as in Miami and Buffalo.

It is hard to say if his 4.3 speed is still there as he nears 30 years of age, but the 49ers’ offense might be even scarier if it is.
