Golden State Warriors and Team USA head coach Steve Kerr has received a ton of criticism during his time leading his squad in the Olympics in Paris, and despite being on the verge of another gold medal, the nine-time NBA champion isn’t doing the best job according to many frustrated fans.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst doesn’t agree with the naysayers and recently came to Kerr’s defense with a strong endorsement of the job he has done so far.

Windhorst appeared on First Take this morning and vehemently defended Kerr’s coaching after the 95-91 victory over Serbia in the quarterfinals, saying “If you look at this roster, if you look at what’s happened in the tournament, they’ve got ten players averaging between 16 and 22 minutes, he’s using the depth” and added “They played FIBA basketball, and that’s what Steve Kerr has been training them for the last month. They responded to the gameplan and the training and delivered.”

Windhorst noted that he spoke with USA basketball officials after the win against Serbia and mentioned how proud they were because of the way Team USA won by playing the FIBA style and relying on defense and teamwork instead of falling back on their most familiar NBA style of play.

Kerr’s main criticism has come from his rotations, to which Windhorst claimed, “What league in the world does 12 guys work? You don’t play 12 guys in high school.”

With 12 players this good, there was always going to be one or two guys who didn’t get the minutes many fans felt they deserved, only in this case, Kerr is stuck with having to bench All-Stars like Jayson Tatum and Tyrese Haliburton.

One more win will get Team USA another gold medal and hopefully silence some of the critics.
