With a myriad of NBA superstars, Team USA was almost obliged to win the gold medal.
Anything short of that would’ve been considered a massive failure for Steve Kerr’s team.
Notably, LeBron James knows a thing or two about that, as he was on the wrong end of the podium in his first trip to the Olympics, being the face of the team that brought the bronze medal home.
For any other team, winning a bronze medal would’ve been a huge accomplishment.
For James and the Americans, it was a big stain on their résumé.
That’s why, now that he’s won three gold medals, it’s safe to say that he’s redeemed himself.
Following the win over France, James addressed the fans to let them know that the team had fulfilled its goal of winning the gold, and he looked quite happy and relieved about it (via USA Basketball).

Serbia took Team USA down the stretch in the semifinal until Curry hit some big shots.
Then, as France kept making a push late in the game, the Golden State Warriors star came to save the day again.
Even so, James was perhaps the most consistent player not named Nikola Jokic in the entire tournament, so even though his numbers weren’t as good as Jokic’s, it made sense that he won MVP.
Now, James has won almost every possible individual award in basketball, adding even more accolades to his already unmatched résumé.
