Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr may have had a rough time during the 2023-24 NBA season, but he was able to redeem himself as he led Team USA to an exciting gold medal finish in the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

USA Basketball was able to overcome host country France in the gold medal game, edging them out thanks to a heroic performance from Warriors’ star Stephen Curry.

Curry hit several clutch 3-pointers in the closing minutes to give the Americans the win, earning his first Olympic gold in the process.

As for Kerr, he was able to pull off a win despite some questionable lineup and rotation decisions along the way.

Kerr drew some criticism for benching players like Jayson Tatum, as well as starting Joel Embiid over Anthony Davis but ultimately it worked out.

However, it appears that Team USA will likely have a new head coach when the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles take place as Kerr is reportedly set to step down from the job via Evan Sidery of Forbes.

“Steve Kerr is likely to retire as Team USA head coach, which means a new lead voice for 2028 in Los Angeles. Erik Spoelstra is viewed as the strong internal favorite to become Team USA’s next in line following Gregg Popovich and Kerr,” Sidery reported.

Kerr was a member of the coaching staff in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics before making the jump, so Erik Spoelstra makes a lot of sense as his potential replacement.

The world stage is only getting more and more difficult, so it’ll be interesting to see how Spoelstra does if he is indeed set to replace Kerr.
