The Miami Heat may not have had a strong close to the 2023-24 NBA season, but the organization was well-represented in the 2024 Olympics in Paris as Bam Adebayo and Erik Spoelstra helped lead Team USA to its fifth consecutive gold medal.

Adebayo was a key part of head coach Steve Kerr’s rotation as he came off the bench and helped anchor the defense along with Anthony Davis.

Meanwhile, Spoelstra was one of Kerr’s assistants and likely had a large say in how the team operated on both ends of the floor.

Spoelstra is widely considered to be one of the best head coaches in the league today and for good reason as he has a natural feel for schemes and a knack for getting the most out of his players.

With reports circulating that Kerr will step down as Team USA head coach for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, Spoelstra is reportedly being tabbed as his likely successor via Evan Sidery of Forbes.

“Steve Kerr is likely to retire as Team USA head coach, which means a new lead voice for 2028 in Los Angeles. Erik Spoelstra is viewed as the strong internal favorite to become Team USA’s next in line following Gregg Popovich and Kerr,” Sidery reported.

The transition from Kerr to Spoelstra would make the most sense as the former took over the reins once San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich left the program.

Like Spoelstra, Kerr was an assistant under Popovich and Team USA will likely follow the same progression once the time comes.
