After a disappointing stint with the San Francisco 49ers that was marred by injuries and bad timing, former first-round pick Trey Lance gets a chance at a fresh start with the Dallas Cowboys as backup to star quarterback Dak Prescott.

Although there’s no telling when Lance will see the field for the Cowboys in the years to come, the North Dakota State product had the privilege of being named one of the three captains on the team on Sunday for their preseason matchup against the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium.

According to Ed Werder of ESPN via Cowboys public relations, head coach Mike McCarthy has given Lance the offensive captain designation, as well as made linebacker Damone Clark the captain of defense and linebacker Buddy Johnson the captain of special teams.

Although Lance’s NFL future is very much in the air as he will be backing up one of the best quarterbacks in the league today, the Cowboys seem to hold him in high regard, and if something happens to Prescott next season or beyond, they’ll be calling the young quarterback’s number to lead the charge offensively.

With the Cowboys hoping to be a legitimate Super Bowl title contender this season, Dallas will prioritize Prescott’s health and won’t want to take unnecessary risks during their three preseason games, meaning Lance could see considerable time on the field before Week 1.

It’ll be interesting to see if Lance can make an impression during this preseason to give the team that much more confidence to hand the keys over to him if Prescott goes down or leaves the team at some point in the near future.
