The Kansas City Chiefs struck gold in the NFL Draft.
They drew some criticism for trading up to get Patrick Mahomes, who was a very controversial prospect at the time.
Some thought he was erratic and out of control, while others argued that he was years away.
Moreover, they were already set at the position with a proven veteran like Alex Smith.
Notably, not many players take it lightly when a team takes their replacement in the first round.
Smith, however, embraced Mahomes and took him under his wing.
Talking to Travis Kelce for his New Heights podcast, Mahomes showered Smith with praise and thanked him for taking that approach with him.

He argued that he didn’t have to be so good to him, yet he immediately started giving him plenty of pointers that really helped him speed up his development.
Mahomes argued that Smith helped him take his game three steps forward.
At the end of the day, things worked out perfectly for Mahomes.
The Chiefs gave him the reins of the offense, and the rest is history.
He’s now one of the best quarterbacks the game has ever seen, proving all the doubters wrong and that the Chiefs were right to take such a big gamble on him.
Even so, a lot of that was thanks to Smith and the confidence and knowledge he instilled in him, and that’s why having good veterans is so crucial for every team.
