During the 2024 NFL Draft, a new record was set with six quarterbacks being taken in the first round, starting with Caleb Williams and ending with Bo Nix, which makes for some interesting storylines around the league in terms of how many of these rookie quarterbacks will be Week 1 starters next month.
Although there’s no doubt that Williams will be the Chicago Bears starter and other rookies like Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye might also get the nod from their head coaches come Week 1, there was some debate over whether J.J. McCarthy would get the start over veteran Sam Darnold for the Minnesota Vikings.
Those discussions came to an end this week with the team announcing that McCarthy would miss his entire rookie season in Minnesota after undergoing knee surgery, which is devastating news for the Vikings, who have high hopes that he will be the new leader under center for many years to come.
In the aftermath of the unfortunate news for Minnesota, former NFL quarterback turned ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky took to Twitter to react to the news that McCarthy will miss the 2024 NFL season and map out two things that should happen for the Vikings, starting with head coach Kevin O’Connell.

Orlovsky makes a valid point regarding O’Connell, who has proven to be a solid head coach for the Vikings and someone they should keep around for the long term, especially to help develop McCarthy moving forward.
He also believes the Vikings might’ve lucked out by not being forced to play McCarthy right away and giving him a chance to learn from the sideline and soaking up the knowledge from Darnold, who knows exactly what it is like to be thrust into a situation in the NFL too soon as a quarterback.
