The New England Patriots are headed into a new era, parting ways with legendary head coach Bill Belichick after 24 seasons and six Vince Lombardi Trophies.

After the Pats officially moved on from Belichick, they brought in a familiar face to be his successor, as they hired former player Jerod Mayo as head coach while also trading quarterback Mac Jones to make way for rookie Drake Maye, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, to be the future face of the franchise in New England.

Although there could be several rookie quarterbacks around the league who will start come Week 1, like No. 1 pick Caleb Williams of the Chicago Bears and Washington Commanders newcomer Jayden Daniels, the No. 2 choice, it remains uncertain whether Maye will get the nod for the Pats over veteran Jacoby Brissett.

According to former NFL player Ross Tucker, Maye may not be trending toward being the Week 1 starter for the Patriots because he’s getting limited work due to a unique concern.

“This is where you get into a weird situation, right?” Tucker said, via Draft Kings Network. “I think they’d like to get Drake Maye more work. I’m not convinced they want to put Drake Maye out there without the starting offensive line.”

Tucker mentioned the recent preseason injury suffered by Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy as another reason why Maye might be getting limited reps.

However, a lot can change in a matter of weeks, and it might not be out of the realm of possibility that he starts when the Pats go on the road to face the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 1 on Sept. 9.

Only time will tell if the Patriots continue to take a cautious approach with Maye or thrust him into the fire.
