The Atlanta Falcons are handling things in a not so usual way with their quarterback situation.
First, they overpay to make sure to get Kirk Cousins away from the Minnesota Vikings.
Then, they use their No. 8 pick to get Michael Penix Jr.
Now, they didn’t even play their first-round rookie in their second preseason game.
NFL analyst Chris Simms said that it was the ‘shocker of the weekend,’ and it might be an indication of them being worried about Cousins being ready to take the field in Week 1.
Shocker of the weekend: Michael Penix not playing. Are they worried about Kirk Cousins being ready for Week 1? That would be the only reason you wouldn’t play Penix. Why not get him the reps?

Penix was very impressive in his first taste of NFL action, with some thinking he was actually the best rookie quarterback of the first week.
The fact that they didn’t play him at all despite being healthy is odd, to say the least.
Despite him being up in age for a quarterback prospect and his experience, Penix could definitely use the reps.
The Falcons are very high on him to take him with the No. 8 selection, and they should feel confident in him being their starter for the future, which only makes this decision even more head-scratching.
There haven’t been that many updates regarding Cousins’ recovery from that season-ending injury, either, so there’s no actual word about whether he’s going to be out there to start the season or not.
Whatever the case, this situation has led to plenty of uncomfortable conversations, and that’s not the way you want to start a new era with a new quarterback, that’s for sure.
