One of the most improbable and movie-like stories in the NFL regarding a quarterback reaching superstardom while going on to be an all-time great has to be Tom Brady’s rise with the New England Patriots.
As the No. 199 overall pick in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft, no one knew who Brady was outside of diehard fans of the University of Michigan, as he had to battle for playing time with the Wolverines before being lucky enough to be selected late in the draft.
Ultimately, Brady did enough to impress Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, who made him the backup quarterback to Drew Bledsoe, the face of the franchise at the time.
Unfortunately for Bledsoe, all Brady needed was a chance to show what he could do on the football field, and he got it when Bledsoe went down with an injury. The eventual seven-time Super Bowl champion took over as the starter and never looked back.
During an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Belichick opened up about Brady and when he saw the superstar quarterback improve the most during his incredible NFL career.
“Tom Brady was one of our hardest workers as a rookie and he didn’t even play. He improved every day for 20 years, but I think the biggest improvement came in the first four years,” Belichick said, via Savage Sports.

Brady is the perfect example of what hard work and determination can do for a player in the NFL, and as a result, is widely regarded as the greatest quarterback of all time.
As for Belichick, things didn’t go well after Brady chose to leave the Patriots for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and New England has struggled ever since, resulting in the head coach’s firing after the 2023 NFL season.
