When Klay Thompson decided to leave the Golden State Warriors for the Dallas Mavericks, it was clearly because he thought he had a better chance of winning a title with them.

He was ready to turn the page and start a new chapter in his career.

There were other forces at work apparently, including Kyrie Irving.

Speaking to NBC Sports, Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd spoke about Irving’s influence on Thompson and his decision.

“Kai being able to, player to player, (detail) his experience of what Dallas has been like for him in two years and being able to tell Klay the honest truth of what he thinks can happen with Klay coming to Dallas,” Kidd said.

Irving is the perfect person to talk with Thompson and convince him to come to Dallas.

Obviously, the Mavericks weren’t Irving’s first team and he had been with multiple franchises before coming to Dallas.

But when he traveled to the Mavericks, things positively changed for him and he has found a lot of success.

The team is in much better shape than they were and went all the way to the Finals last season.

Irving knows firsthand the benefits of playing for Dallas and surely told Thompson about all he could gain from moving to the Mavericks.

Even with last season’s troubles, Thompson could have signed with several different teams because he is still a hot commodity.

The fact that he chose the Mavericks was because of his aspirations to win and the words and guidance of Irving.
