The San Francisco 49ers are all set at the quarterback position.

Brock Purdy, once a third-stringer and a bit of an afterthought, has now established himself as the undisputed starter.

However, if there’s something Kyle Shanahan and the Niners have found out the hard way, it is that you can never have too many options at quarterback.

That’s why they’re taking their time figuring out who’s going to be Purdy’s backup between Brandon Allen and Josh Dobbs.

As reported by Nick Wagoner on Twitter, Shanahan recently stated that it was too close of a call to give either of them the nod at the moment.

#49ers HC Kyle Shanahan says it’s still too close to call for the No. 2 QB job. One thing I think is clear is that they should keep all three of Brock Purdy, Josh Dobbs and Brandon Allen. Based on body of work, Dobbs and Allen are among the 53 best players on this roster.

Truth be told, given the way their roster is currently shaped, it wouldn’t be shocking to see the Niners holding onto both Allen and Dobbs.

It’s hard to envision either of them remaining there as practice-squad players, as they’re both high-end backups who could find a new home somewhere else in no time.

Needless to say, the Niners will hope that they don’t need to turn to either of them.

Of course, unless it’s because they’re up double digits late in the fourth quarter and need someone to carry them home while they keep the starters safe and sound.

But this is a physical sport.

Purdy stumbled upon the field almost by accident, going from Mr. Irrelevant to starter because of a string of injuries.

And while that’s not likely to happen again with Allen or Dobbs, they already know that they might need to use all of their quarterbacks in a season.
