Not so long ago, the San Francisco 49ers didn’t hesitate to put together a very appealing package of assets to get their hands on Trey Lance.
Despite his lack of experience, his physical traits and potential as a modern-day quarterback were remarkable.
He could make plays with his legs, he had a strong arm, and he looked confident and determined to take risks.
Fast forward to today, and injuries and lackluster development have kept him on the sidelines more often than not.
Then, in what was most likely his final audition to be the Dallas Cowboys’ QB for the future, he threw five interceptions.
However, Lance also had some electric plays, which is why former NFL QB Chase Daniel claimed to be left ‘seriously confused’ by his performance.
I’m seriously so confused on Trey Lance. Just threw an INT in the end zone then does this next drive!! pic.twitter.com/JAuQEHfnRR

Daniel shared a clip of Lance’s explosive TD run, which happened on the very next drive after throwing a pick in the end-zone.
That was the tale of the night for Lance, who alternated head-scratching interceptions with highlight-reel-like plays.
The talent is evident, and so is the athleticism and speed.
Perhaps he’s not in the right offense, but if you fail to establish yourself in Kyle Shanahan’s offense, perhaps the system isn’t the problem.
Whatever the case, throwing five picks against second and third-stringers in the preseason is far from ideal, even for a backup.
Barring a shocking turn of events, Lance might never turn out to be as good as scouts expected him to be, and the Cowboys might have to look somewhere else to find their quarterback of the future.
