The Washington Commanders are one of the most storied franchises in the NFL and are heading into a completely new era with new ownership, a new coaching staff, and a new quarterback while trying to move on from a checkered past that marred a lot of their history prior to their name change.
In one instance, the franchise dropped the ball hard when honoring a late great team legend, and new ownership is quickly moving to remedy that mistake.
NFL on ESPN shared on X that the Commanders are planning on building a statue to honor former safety Sean Taylor, two years after the team unveiled a memorial installation that was heavily criticized by fans and has already been permanently removed from the facility.

The previous “statue” the old regime unveiled to honor Taylor wasn’t a statue at all and was basically just his uniform and pads hung up inside a glass enclosure, and fans immediately crushed the team for creating such a lazy and disrespectful memorial.
When fans think of statues, they think of the ones outside Crypto.com arena of Magic Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and other NBA legends that were commemorated appropriately and the fans can be proud of and take photos with.
The old Sean Taylor exhibit was a travesty and a perfect representation of the previous ownership under Dan Snyder, but the new owner, Josh Harris, is doing everything he can to wipe the slate clean.
It’s great that the team listened to the fans on this one, and a proper statue will go a long way toward building a better relationship with Commanders fans.
