The Indianapolis Colts saw their 2023 season derail rather quickly once rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson went down for the season with a shoulder injury, but he is back this year and ready to roll.

Another rookie quarterback has been impressive during preseason in an effort to solidify his role as a backup to Richardson, and one analyst recently detailed just how good he has been.

Warren Sharp shared a list of stats that detail just how good Colts rookie Jason Bean has been, pointing out that he is first in EPA/dropback (+.47), EPA/attempt (+.30), success rate (66 percent), YPA (10.4), air yards/attempt (12.2), and No. 2 in completion rate at 79 percent.

of 67 QBs, Jason Bean ends the preseason ranked:

#1 in EPA/dropback (+0.47)
#1 in EPA/att (+0.30)
#1 in success rate (66%)
#1 in YPA (10.4)
#1 in air yards/att (12.2)
#2 in completion rate (79%)

The undrafted free agent out of Kansas wrapped up the preseason 15-for-19 for 197 yards and one touchdown to go along with a pick, and he finished 4-for-4 for 52 yards in the Colts’ preseason finale against the Cincinnati Bengals before suffering a shoulder injury.

He had a strange college career as he never threw for more than the 1,681 yards he collected as a senior, yet he somehow threw for over 400 yards twice and has Kansas’ current single-game record for passing yards at 449 despite never being consistent enough to be a full-time starter.

His chances of making the roster are slim to none given the signing of Joe Flacco this offseason to go along with Sam Ehlinger and fellow rookie Kedon Slovis.

On July 17th, Bean was the first overall pick in the UFL Draft by the Memphis Showboats, which throws an odd wrench into his potential NFL plans.

If this preseason was just a showcase, Bean could be back in the league after a stint in the UFL if that’s what he plans to do.
