The New England Patriots enter the 2024 NFL season with more questions than answers.

They’re not a good football team by any means, roster-wise or talent-wise, and we have yet to see if they are coaching-wise.

However, among all the many issues they currently have, one stands out the most: the offensive line.

Following their preseason finale, HC Jerod Mayo addressed that concern and was brutally honest about it when talking to the media (via Carols Talks Pats).

“I think it is a concern… the biggest concern for me, it’s not the X’s and O’s of what to do, it’s just the lack of discipline that they showed today. And that’s on all of us… it starts with me,” Mayo said.

Jerod Mayo’s thoughts on the #Patriots offensive line:

“I think it is a concern… the biggest concern for me, it’s not the X’s and O’s of what to do, it’s just the lack of discipline that they showed today. And that’s on all of us… it starts with me. I gotta be more diligent… pic.twitter.com/IEyvP7OfBp

The first-year coach stated that he wasn’t even concerned about the X’s and O’s or anything like that but about their lack of discipline.

He stated that it was all on him, adding that he had to be more diligent and get his players ready to avoid those kinds of pre-snap penalties.

Mayo also believes his players have to be held accountable for their lack of discipline and poor performance, adding that the referees actually did a great job and warned them multiple times.

Offensive line play is crucial to a team’s success — or lack thereof — and things aren’t looking good at all for Mayo in his first season in charge of the organization.

This could be a very, very long season in Foxboro, even more than last season was.

And while it’s necessary to go through this kind of thing to reap the rewards in the future, it wouldn’t be much of a surprise to see this team end up with the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
