The Pittsburgh Steelers have had one of the few true quarterback battles in the NFL this preseason, and head coach Mike Tomlin has finally named a starter, as former Super Bowl champion Russell Wilson will be their fourth different opening-day starting quarterback over the past four years.

Wilson was in a battle with Justin Fields and won out despite an uninspiring preseason as the team decided to go with the proven, safer option.

Wilson recently spoke with the media and was asked what he did to win the job.

“I think we all just try to be our best every day. I think every day I try to step in the building and just try to bring my energy, bring focus, the detail, the experience of it all, too, and then we step in between the white lines and do everything we can to be the best version of you,” Wilson said, via Chris Adamski of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

It’s a typical, diplomatic response from Wilson, who rarely gives fun sound bites to the media, but it sounds like he is ready to prove he’s still got it after being cut by the Denver Broncos.

Wilson was criticized for being too conservative last year, and the Broncos parted with him after just two seasons, despite having to pay him most of the $39 million he was due this season.

Even though Wilson won the job, there’s no reason to believe his seat isn’t at least a little bit hot, as one or two bad games could be all it takes for Tomlin to make the switch to Fields.
