The New England Patriots have decided on a starting quarterback.
However, head coach Jerod Mayo has not announced who that player will be for Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season.
The quarterback battle this preseason has been between veteran Jacoby Brissett and rookie Drake Maye.
“We’ve made a decision. … What’s good for the team today may not be good for the team weeks down the line,” Mayo said, via NBC Sports Boston.

This is Brissett’s second stint in New England after he was selected by the team in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft.
He has started 48 games in his NFL career, thrown 51 touchdown passes and 23 interceptions, and has a passer rating of 85.3.
In most respects, he is the perfect bridge quarterback for the Pats because he knows the team and has experience starting in the league.
If Mayo decides to roll with the 31-year-old, it might not be the worst call because of his experience and the fact that he is not the future for the rebuilding team.
Maye, on the other hand, is the future.
The ACC Player of the Year out of North Carolina was selected with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and had the best preseason of any Patriots quarterback.
He completed 21 of 34 passes for 192 yards and one touchdown.
While the Pats could opt to go with Brissett to open the season, Maye could later take over at some point.
Mayo soon will let the world know who will be starting under center Week 1 at the Cincinnati Bengals.
