The New England Patriots will have to wait a little longer before their prized rookie hits the field.

That’s assuming Jacoby Brissett is out there and healthy.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Jerod Mayo has officially informed the players of his decision to start Brissett and have Drake Maye as his backup.

Now official: #Patriots coach Jerod Mayo informed players in a team meeting that Jacoby Brissett is the starting QB, while Drake Maye will be his backup.

Notably, the first-year head coach had a similar take before the preseason started, stating that Brissett was their most ‘NFL-ready’ quarterback at the moment.

This shouldn’t surprise anybody.

As promising as Maye is as a player, he was clearly a work in progress when they took him out of college.

Granted, starting a proven veteran and subpar starter like Brissett might seem like a missed or wasted season in Foxboro, and that could be true to a degree.

Then again, after watching how things fared with Mac Jones, it’s normal to see them err on the side of caution this time around.

Some players learn while doing, but throwing a quarterback into the fire before he’s ready could be harmful to his development.

He could get hurt or mentally broken, and it’s better to take the long route if that means he’ll be their guy for years to come once he’s ready.

And with the offensive line they have right now, they might actually be doing him a favor by keeping him on the sidelines.
