The New England Patriots just acquired their most valuable asset for the next decade or so.
As such, they must make sure to protect him.
That’s why, as much as the fans will hate to see that Jacoby Brissett will be their starter, it’s just for the greater good.
With that in mind, former NFL QB Dan Orlovsky took to X to praise HC Jerod Mayo and GM Eliot Wolf for not starting Drake Maye.
Totally right move by Mayo and Wolff for team now, Maye and team in future
Good for them for doing what’s right https://t.co/0KA7SrNnlm

Simply put, Orlovsky believes this is the right move for the future, even if it might not be a popular one.
Mayo and Wolf could’ve caved into the pressure and just went with the promising rookie.
On the one hand, that would’ve allowed him to grow through his mistakes and get a grasp of the offense right out of the gate.
On the other hand, that also risked exposing him without being ready, and more often than not, young quarterbacks who get mentally broken are not able to come back from that.
The Patriots don’t have anyone to throw the ball to.
They don’t have a reliable offensive line to protect Maye, either.
This might feel like a waste of a season, but in reality, Maye will get to work every single day with NFL trainers and coaches to polish his game and be ready for the upcoming season.
