The New England Patriots have officially named their starting quarterback.

Head coach Jerod Mayo recently told the New England media that veteran Jacoby Brissett will be the Week 1 starter for the team.

“As an organization, we feel like Jacoby gives us the best chance to win right now,” Mayo said.

Mayo has decided to roll with the 31-year-old veteran over rookie quarterback Drake Maye.

This is not a surprise considering New England is a rebuilding team and is not that strong up front.

Putting Maye under center in harm’s way could hurt his confidence if the team were to struggle early on, which is why they decided to go with a journeyman quarterback.

Brissett will be starting the season while playing with a makeshift group of receivers.

He will be throwing to veteran receiver Kendrick Bourne, young pass-catchers DeMario Douglas and Ja’Lynn Polk, along with veteran tight end Hunter Henry.

In a loaded AFC East and a loaded AFC as a whole, the Pats are likely not going to be much of a threat this year as they look to lay the foundation for the future.

This is why they likely could start Drake Maye later on after he is a lot more comfortable in the offense.

But again, Mayo believes in Brissett as a player and as a leader just a little bit more right now.

Remember, Brissett has started 48 career games, thrown 51 touchdowns and 23 interceptions, and he has a career passer rating of 85.3.
