Brandon Aiyuk’s ongoing contract saga finally ended on Thursday when the San Francisco 49ers gave him a 4-year deal worth $120 million, putting an end to a months-long awkward back-and-forth that featured plenty of trade rumors and suspect social media posts.
People had a lot to say about the deal, but Philadelphia Eagles safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson had a unique take about the situation.
Gardner-Johnson took to X following the Aiyuk news and said, “Crazy, wideouts making 100 million, when DB is the hardest position.”

CJGJ signed a 3-year deal for $27 million to return to the Eagles this offseason after he spent 2022 with the team and then the 2023 season with the Detroit Lions, where he played just three games due to injury.
The deal made him the 14th-highest-paid safety in the league with Antoine Winfield of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers taking the top spot as he is in the midst of a 4-year, $84.1 million deal, the largest ever for a safety.
Jaire Alexander is the league’s highest-paid cornerback on a similar 4-year, $84 million deal.
There are 18 wide receivers set to earn more in 2024 than the $21 million per year Alexander is getting, so Gardner-Johnson has a point with his tweet.
It is often said that corner is the most difficult position to play, but the reality is that the NFL is an offensive league and it’s likely that players on that side of the ball will continue to get the biggest deals.
A lot of defensive backs probably agree with Gardner-Johnson on this one.
